When Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants' Canoe, atop the TD Bank Tower, had to close to update its plumbing system, the owners decided it was also time for the restaurant's first major design rehaul since it opened 15 years ago. Lindsey Anacleto of Anacleto Design was tapped to update the space, which reopened on January 31. To open up the 140-seat restaurant, Anacleto lowered seating backs and removed potential view obstructions, while adding a charcoal soapstone bar, chef's rail, side stands, and new furnishings like walnut tables and mohair-covered Saarinen chairs.

    4. My Artsy Good Time With Exquisite Corpses, Inflatable Pigs, Chinese New Year…and GAGA-Gaku [new York]

At first I felt foolish when I arrived at the “Gone! Gala Happening,” which benefited the Karole Armitage Foundation—a prestigious modern dance group, in case you didn’t know. For some reason, I thought the event title “Gone!” meant the foundation’s namesake was gone for a sabbatical or retirement or something. But there she was, standing in the reception foyer of Capitale on February 3, greeting guests, making chitchat, and being distinctly not gone. She’s impossible to miss—she’s the dance world’s Annie Lennox doppelgänger in both appearance (tall, gangly, platinum pixie) and talent (wholly ...

Friday evening's 10th anniversary outing of Motionball, a gala that raises money for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, took place at the Carlu for the first time. The new setting's elegant lighting and details allowed chairman and co-founder Paul Etherington and operations coordinator Maryn McGill to put on a bigger party than in years past, while still cutting costs on decor. "In the past two years at Capitol Theatre, we spent thousands on decor," said Etherington. "This year, our decor really was the venue. We added a few red accents to match our colors, but really it doesn ...
