Science Center Ball Embraces California Theme With a Mock Orange Grove and Beachfront Pier [los Angeles]
With that old energetic tune "California Here I Come" playing on the arrivals carpet amid a backdrop of evocative state travel posters, the theme on Saturday at the California Science Center's 13th annual Discovery Ball was established early: a whimsical homage to all things California, from the decor to the local restaurants and wines. The museum's hands-on vice president of food and event services, Christina Sion, oversaw this year's program, which returned to its standard Discovery Ball concept after a departure in name and format last year, when the ball took the form of the opening of ...

Chicago Bartenders Offer Custom, Seasonally Inspired Cocktails [CHICAGO]
Mixing vodka with soda does the liquor a giant disservice, if you ask Keri Uffelman and Gina Rauch, co-founders of cocktail catering company Through the Liquor Glass. “We’re about tasting the spirits, balancing them, and approaching them like a sommelier,” says Rauch. “We don’t mask the taste of liquor by using sodas or flavored vodkas. We prepare drinks using culinary techniques, where we’re cooking down herbs, spices, flowers, and fruits, then steaming and straining them.” Just under a year ago, the longtime friends joined forces to launch the firm, which Rauch says “celebrates the art of the ...

[Before I got into events,] I stage managed theater and dance, toured, production managed, and was even, for a brief time, a stagehand,” says Field. “Events with performance components and complicated logistics are my specialty.” After working in-house for 14 years, Field says, she wanted to branch out and work with a wider range of clients again. 6. Boston Florist Creates Garden-Inspired Arrangements [BOSTON]

Before opening her Huron Village shop, Hanaya Floral Design, Hiroko Takeshita studied engineering technology and worked in computer graphics at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. “I wanted to somehow combine computers and flowers,” she says. In 2005, she got her chance to take the plunge into full-time design. Takeshita’s husband, who worked for Garden Design magazine, produced the publication’s booth for the Chicago Flower and Garden Show and tapped Takeshita to design the flowers. “That was when I realized, ‘Wow, I really love flowers. 7. Washington-Area Calligrapher Adds Whimsy to Menus, Place Cards, and More [washington]

Calligrapher Annie Lloyd is known for her signature script—modern characters with graceful lines and loose curves. But Lloyd, founder of Northern Virginia-based Pretty Mail Calligraphy, honed her craft in an unlikely way. “I wear eyeliner, and I laugh that my precision is from putting on eyeliner for so many years,” she says. Lloyd has other training, too. As a child, she wrote her name over and over again on a chalkboard set up in her playroom. In college at James Madison University, Lloyd first studied interior design, practicing perfect block handwriting for architectural renderings, but ultimately graduated with a ...

The line, which includes leather jackets and boots, was partially inspired by the classic James Dean film, so the brand took cues for the event from there, alluding to rebellious youth with motorcycle gear and playful quips printed on pillows and other items.
